Road Trip with a Baby: 15 Tips for First Time Parents

Hey there, new parents! If you’re considering hitting the open road with your little one for the first time, I’m here to tell you: You’ve got this! While a road trip with a baby might seem daunting at first, with a bit of planning and a dash of patience, you’ll be cruising along in no time.

For instance, we embarked on an epic three-week road trip from Colorado to California and back when our baby was only 3 months old. And guess what? We made it through! It was definitely challenging, but with careful planning and preparation, we managed to make it happen.

I’ve compiled 15 essential tips to make your first road trip with your baby as smooth as possible. Trust me, these little tricks can make a huge difference in the experience.

Plan the Road Trip Around Baby’s Schedule

The key to a smoother road trip with a baby is timing. Babies thrive on routine, so if you can align your travel with nap times or even night time, you can avoid a lot of the fuss. Try to plan your drive during your baby’s sleep window – early mornings or after their afternoon nap are great times to hit the road.

Pack for the "Just In Case" Moments

The last thing you want is to be caught unprepared. Make sure your diaper bag is stocked and ready for anything. Here’s a quick packing guide for baby road trips:

Essentials for a Road Trip With a Baby:

  • Diapers & Wipes:
Always bring more than you think you’ll need. Keep a small stash in the car for easy access.
  • Diaper Changing Pad:
A portable pad is a must for changing diapers in less-than-ideal places like rest stops or parking lots. For example, on our first road trip with our baby, I changed her diapers a lot on the back seat of the car.
  • Baby Clothes (x2 or 3):
Accidents happen, so bring a couple of extra outfits for those unexpected spills or blowouts.
  • Hat:
If you are traveling to warm and sunny places, don’t forget to get a baby hat for your little one.
  • Baby Blanket:
Whether it’s for nap time, tummy time, or just to keep the baby cozy, a blanket is always handy. It can keep your baby warm and soothed.
  • Feeding Supplies:
If you’re breastfeeding, a cover-up and a nursing pillow might come in handy. For instance, I fed my baby in the car quite a few times, and my breastfeeding pillow helped a lot.
If you’re formula feeding, bring enough formula, bottles, and a cooler bag to store them safely. Don’t forget the b
urp cloths and bibs, and also a dish soap, a brush for the bottles, and a portable drying rack.
  • Baby Food & Snacks:
If you about to start feeding your baby solids, prepare to take baby food jars, snacks, spoons, feeding sets, a sippy cup.
  • Pacifiers, Teething Rings & Toys:
Distractions are your best friend. Teething can be uncomfortable for babies on long car rides, so pack a few teethers and quiet toys to distract them.

Plan for Frequent Stops on Longer Road Trips

If you’re going on a longer trip, consider breaking it up into smaller, manageable segments. Plan for frequent breaks (at least every 2-3 hours) to stretch, feed, and change your baby.

The good news? Frequent stops allow for some nice breaks for you too. Plan to stop at rest areas, parks, or scenic spots to give both you and your baby some fresh air. You will stay refreshed and comfortable throughout the trip.

Consider also taking a stroller or baby carrier. A lightweight stroller is perfect for pit stops. If you prefer hands-free, a baby carrier will be your best friend.

Bring Baby’s Favorite Comfort Items

If your baby has a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or lovey, bring it along. Having familiar items can help your little one feel more secure and settle down for naps or quiet moments in the car.

Create a Baby-Friendly Car Setup

Comfort is key, especially on long drives. Here’s how to ensure your baby is as comfortable as possible:

  • Car SeatObviously, but make sure it’s properly installed and check if your baby is comfortable in it for long periods. If you’re traveling across state lines, double-check car seat laws.
  • Rearview Mirror: A baby car mirror allows you to keep an eye on your baby without having to turn around while driving. Additionally, babies love to look themselves in the mirror.
  • Sun Shades: Babies can be extra sensitive to sunlight, so keep their little faces shaded with a car window sun shade.
  • Travel Pillow: A soft neck pillow for your baby can make naps in the car much more comfortable.
  • Temperature Control: Babies can’t regulate their body temperature as well as we can, so keep them cool in summer or warm in winter. Dress them in layers that you can easily adjust, and always have a lightweight blanket handy.
  • Entertainment: While your baby might be too young for games, soft toys, books, rattles, and teething rings can keep them entertained. Some parents swear by hanging soft toys from the backseat headrests to provide entertainment and distraction.
  • Baby Travel Seat: For older babies who can sit up, a portable travel seat can be a game-changer for meal stops.

Managing Baby's Sleep on the Road Trip

Babies love routines. If you can, try to align your road trip around your baby’s nap or bedtime. Nighttime driving can be particularly effective if your baby tends to sleep through the night, but make sure you’re comfortable driving in the dark first.

Getting your baby to sleep during a road trip can be tricky, but a few tips might help:

  • Bring Their Sleep Essentials: If your baby is used to a specific blanket, lovey, or white noise machine, make sure to pack it. Familiar smells and sounds can be comforting on the road.
  • Stick to a Routine: While it’s not always possible to follow your usual routine, try to keep bedtime or nap times consistent. This will help your baby feel more at ease even in a new environment.
  • White Noise App: If your baby needs extra soothing, a white noise app or lullaby playlist can drown out car sounds and help them settle.
  • Travel Crib/Baby Lounger: If you plan on stopping for a few nights, a travel crib or portable bassinet can be really helpful. For instance, at our first road trip, we brought a baby lounger, which we used for co sleeping while camping and sleeping in hotels.

Know Where the Baby-Friendly Stops Are

If you’re traveling to unfamiliar areas, do a little research ahead of time to find baby-friendly rest stops or attractions. For example, some rest areas have family friendly bathrooms with changing tables, or even baby nursing rooms. Knowing where to stop in advance can make things a lot easier when you need to take a break.

Have a Strategy for Feeding Time

Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, try to plan for feeding stops in advanceIf you’re breastfeeding, consider using a cover-up or travel nursing pillow for extra comfort. If you’re bottle-feeding, having a cooler bag to store bottles will ensure you have everything you need when hunger strikes.

Stay Calm During Fussy Moments

It’s inevitable—your baby will get fussy at some point. When that happens, stay calm. Sometimes all your baby needs is a quick diaper change or a soothing lullabyIf your baby gets especially upset, pull over in a safe place to comfort them. No rush—remember, you’re in this for the long haul!

Bring New Toys for The Road Trip

Babies can get bored too! If your baby’s a little older and can hold onto toys, consider packing a few new items that will keep them entertained during the road trip. Rotate the toys to keep things fresh!

Take Photos & Videos

While you’re on the road, don’t forget to take lots of photos and videos. These early trips with your little one will become precious memories, and it’s fun to look back at how tiny they were during your first family adventure. I recommend buying a Go Pro action camera for taking awesome quality videos.

Don’t Forget Mom and Dad Essentials

It’s easy to get so focused on your baby that you forget about yourself. Make sure to pack your own road trip essentials:

  • Snacks and Water: Road trips are long, and you’ll need to keep your energy up.
  • Phone Charger & Power Bank: You’ll need these for directions, entertainment, and of course, baby photos!
  • Comfortable Clothing: Think stretchy pants, soft shirts, and comfy shoes.
  • Entertainment: Podcasts, audiobooks, or a music playlist to keep you going.

Keep a Positive Mindset

This one might be the most important tip of all: Stay positive! Road trips with babies may come with challenges, but they’re also an opportunity to create memories, explore new places, and spend quality time together as a family. Take it one step at a time, and remember, you’re doing a great job!

Avoid Overpacking the Car

While you do need to bring a lot of essentials on a road trip with a baby, avoid overpacking. The more cluttered the car, the harder it will be to find what you need in a pinch. Keep your diaper bag organized, and make sure everything is easily accessible when you need it.

Stay Flexible

We all know babies are unpredictable, so while it’s important to plan your road trip, don’t stress if things don’t go according to plan.

I recommend planning out your route and figuring out the general stops, but stay flexible for those unexpected pit stops to feed, change diapers, or soothe your baby.
