Welcoming a newborn baby into your life is an exciting and transformative experience, but it can also be overwhelming to figure out exactly what essentials you should prepare. With countless products on the market, it’s challenging to determine what you genuinely need for your baby.

From clothing and feeding supplies to nursery necessities and travel gear, this comprehensive guide will help you ensure that you have all newborn baby essentials ready for a smooth transition into parenthood.
Clothing Newborn Baby Essentials
Newborn babies need a variety of clothing to keep them comfortable and warm. Choose one that is easy to put on and take off. Also, 100% cotton is the preferred material for their delicate skin.
Opt for a mix of sizes, as some babies outgrow newborn sizes quickly (buy a few newborn, a few 0-3 months, etc.)
Here’s a list of baby clothing essentials you need in the beginning:
5-7 Sleepers
Also known as footed pajamas, these keep babies cozy during sleep. This is the clothing we have used the most!
My advice is to buy only the zippered ones (2 way zippers if possible) as they are much easier for diaper changes. I prefer Carter’s sleepers. They are also great for day use and play time.
4-5 Onesies
Opt for soft, breathable fabrics. Again, look for front-snap or zipper designs for easier diaper changes.
Hats for Newborns
Newborn babies lose heat quickly, so a few soft hats are crucial, especially for colder months. To be honest, the hats that we used the most were the ones that we got from the hospital.
Swaddles
Swaddling helps newborns feel secure. Look for breathable, soft materials like cotton. I bought a few classic swaddles and a few swaddle sleep sacks by KeaBabies.
Socks
Socks are optional. I bought like 5 pairs of socks, but in the beginning, we didn’t use any of them. The baby was swaddled or in a sleeper all the time, so they came in use much later.
Seasonal Considerations
If your baby is born in winter, consider adding:
- Warm Sleepers – Extra layers for colder nights.
- Mittens – To prevent scratching.
For summer babies:
- Lightweight, short-sleeved outfits will keep them cool.
Diapers and Changing Supplies
Diapering is a major part of baby care. Keep a good supply of diapers and wipes, as newborns can go through 10-12 diapers a day. My advice is to set up a diaper station in multiple areas of your home. Here’s what you’ll need:
Diapers
Stock up on newborn-sized diapers or size 1 if you anticipate a larger baby. Cloth or disposable options are available. We have been using Huggies Little Snugglers Diapers.
Water Based Wipes
Gentle, water based, unscented wipes are best for a newborn’s sensitive skin. On the other hand, you can also use soft, damp cloths as a more natural alternative.
Changing Pad & Changing Station
A portable, cushioned changing pad or a dedicated changing station helps keep diaper changes organized and comfortable. I live in a 2-story house, so I have one changing pad in my living room and a changing station in my bedroom.
Diaper Pail
With the amount of diapers you need to change daily, we decided to get a diaper pail for our bedroom. It is very helpful to have one when your nursery is far from your main trash bin.
Diaper Rash Cream
Prevent and treat diaper rash on your newborn’s skin with a soothing cream. We use Earth Mama Organic Diaper Balm.
Diaper Caddy
A diaper caddy can keep all your changing supplies organized and within reach. I got a regular basket from Walmart and put everything I need in it.
Feeding Essentials for Your Newborn Baby
Feeding your newborn baby is a bonding experience, whether you choose to breastfeed or formula-feed. Learn to recognize when your baby is hungry or full by the cues he is showing.
At the beginning, your newborn will want to eat every few hours. Use a mobile application to write down the last time the little one ate. It helps a lot to keep track of how much food and when was the last feeding, especially at night time.
I use the free What to expect app, but many women also use the Huckleberry app. Try to develop a feeding schedule that works for you and your baby.
Breastfeeding Essentials
Here is a list of some breastfeeding essentials:
Nursing Pillow
A supportive pillow helps you maintain a comfortable feeding position. I have been using Boppy nursing pillow and I love it.
For our recent trip to Mexico, I bought also their travel nursing pillow. It helped me a lot for feedings and napping on the planes.
Breast Pump
If you plan to pump milk, invest in a quality pump. Consider whether you want a manual or electric model. I did my research and chose the Medela Pump in Style Electric Pump. Check with your insurance if they can cover this expense.
Breast Milk Storage Bags
These are great for freezing milk for later use. In the beginning, I was collecting milk with my Haakaa cup while baby fed on the other breast. At the end of the day, I froze the collected milk in these storage bags. Don’t forget to put the date on it, as the milk is good for a certain period of time.
Nursing Pads
Disposable or washable nursing pads will help prevent leaks. I used Medela disposable pads in the beginning, before moving to reusable ones.
Nursing Bras
Consider buying nursing bras while you’re still pregnant. I started wearing them in my third trimester and found them far more comfortable than regular bras.
Once you embark on your breastfeeding journey, having several nursing bras is essential. They provide easy access for feedings, open from the front, and are wire-free for all-day comfort.
Bottle Feeding Essentials
If you are considering to bottle feed your baby, here is what you need to have ready at home:
Formula
Consult your pediatrician for recommendations. Start with a small container to see if your baby tolerates it. Don’t buy too much at once.
Bottles and Nipples
Experiment with different bottle shapes and nipple flows to find what your baby prefers. Try to choose ones that mimic breastfeeding.
I bought Dr. Brown’s glass bottles and NB size nipples to be ready, in case I needed to supplement with formula.
Later, we started using them to feed the baby with breast milk when I’m not at home. She loves them and never had any problems.
Bottle Brush & Drying Rack
A good brush will help you clean bottles effectively. Bottle sterilizers and drying racks simplify cleaning and maintaining bottles.
Bottle Warmer
For those late-night feedings, a warmer can help you heat milk quickly and safely.
Nursery Furniture & Bedding
Creating a safe sleep environment is vital for your newborn. Always place your baby on their back to sleep to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Here’s what you’ll need for your nursing room:
Crib or Bassinet & Fitted Sheets
Either a bassinet or a crib, choose a safe, sturdy sleeping space with a firm mattress. Purchase several fitted sheets that fit snugly on the mattress. Keep the sleep area free from toys, pillows, and loose bedding.
When our baby was born, we used a bassinet when we were downstairs during the day, and a crib in our bedroom for the night time. After some research, we chose to get Delta Children convertible crib with a drawer.
Waterproof Bassinet Mattress Protector
Trust me, you will need this at some point. It will save your mattress from soaking.
Swaddle Blankets or Sleep Sacks
These can help keep your baby cozy and warm, and reduce the Startle reflex risk without using loose blankets.
Drawer Dresser
This an optional item for your nursing place. We made the nursery in our bedroom. so we needed a separate drawer dresser to put the baby’s stuff. Again, we chose Delta Children as a furniture option, particularly their 6 drawer dresser.
Rocking Chair or Glider
A rocking chair can be a soothing place for nighttime feedings and comforting your baby.
Baby Monitor
For peace of mind, a baby monitor helps you keep an ear out for your baby while they sleep. Our bedroom is upstairs, so I use it all the time when the baby sleeps.
White Noise Machines
These can help drown out household noises and create a calming environment. We got a combined white noise machine and a night lamp that looks like a unicorn.
Night Lamp
Choose a night lamp with a soft, dim light. You’ll use it during nighttime feedings and diaper changes, and a gentle glow will help avoid waking your little one too much.
Bathing and Grooming Supplies
Bath time is a fun bonding experience! Keep in mind that newborn bathing essentials can often be found in convenient kits or sets.
My tip is to establish a routine to make bath time enjoyable. We do it in the evenings, before the final feeding and going to bed. Don’t forget to always keep one hand on your baby during baths for safety.
Newborn babies need gentle care, so ensure you have the right products for bath time and grooming:
Baby Bathtub
A small, secure tub designed for infants is ideal for safe bathing. We use Frida Baby 4-in-1 Grow-with-Me Baby Bathtub.
Gentle Baby Soap and Shampoo
Look for mild, tear-free, hypoallergenic options that are designed for babies.
Soft Washcloths and Towels
Gentle fabrics are best for delicate and sensitive newborn skin. We use 100% cotton washcloths and towels.
Hooded Towels
A warm, soft towel with a hood will keep your baby cozy after baths.
Soft Washcloths
For gentle cleaning during bath time. For example, I use a small one to clean the baby’s face and the head. In the beginning, I also put another one on her tummy to keep her warm during bath time.
Baby Nail Clippers or Files
You need to have these to avoid scratches and to manage the tiny, fast-growing nails safely. We use an electric baby nail trimmer with replacement pads.
Hairbrush
A soft-bristle baby brush is perfect for keeping your newborn’s hair tidy. We got ours as a present in a baby grooming kit with other healthcare supplies.
Travel Gear Baby Essentials
Venturing out with a newborn baby requires a few key travel essentials:
Car Seat
A rear-facing car seat is a must-have for safe travel. Make sure it meets current safety standards. Before your baby arrives, familiarize yourself with the installation.
Stroller
A stroller that’s easy to maneuver and compatible with your car seat is a practical choice for outings.
My advice is to look for travel systems that include a stroller and a car seat. After comparing a few models, we got Chicco Corso LE Travel System. We love it so far! This is a great quality product that we will use for a long time.
Baby Carrier or Sling
A comfortable carrier can be invaluable for hands-free carrying, allowing you to bond while keeping your baby close. This is the one we received as a present for our baby shower.
Diaper Bag
Choose a spacious diaper bag with compartments and many pockets for organization. We bought the most popular one from Amazon, and we are very satisfied with this purchase.
Health and Safety Items
Keeping your baby safe and healthy is a top priority. Here are essential items:
Thermometer
A digital thermometer is the quickest and most accurate way to monitor your baby’s temperature.
Nasal Aspirator & Saline Mist Spray
These items help clear nasal passages for better breathing. We got Braun electric nasal aspirator for quicker mucus suction. For saline spray, our choice is Little Remedies.
First Aid Kit
Stock it with essentials like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any medications recommended by your pediatrician.
Other Helpful Newborn Essentials
While the above categories cover most newborn essentials, consider adding these helpful items to your list:
Pacifiers
Pacifiers can help soothe and comfort your little one. If you are breastfeeding, the recommendation is to wait a few weeks for establishing good feeding before introducing a pacifier.
Our choice for pacifiers is Mum. They also have glowing ones which is very helpful in the middle of the night!
Swing or Bouncer
These provide a secure place for your baby to relax while you get things done.
Humidifier
A humidifier can help maintain moisture in the air, especially during dry months. We live in Colorado, so a good humidifier in our bedroom is must!
Storage Solutions
Invest in storage solutions such as baskets or bins to keep everything organized. This will make finding items easier, especially during those late-night emergencies.
Black & White Baby Books
Reading to your baby bond and promote early language skills. We started with black and white board books for newborns.
We also got a black and white high contrast soft book for tummy time and brain development.
Digital Apps
Use digital apps to track your baby’s feeding, diaper changes, and sleep patterns. These can help you establish routines and identify your baby’s needs.
More Tips to Get Ready for Your Newborn Baby
- Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations from friends, family, and parenting groups online.
- Keep an eye on sales and discounts for baby products. For example, I bought my stroller travel system on Black Friday.
- Create a baby registry on Amazon and/or Target to help you keep track of the items you’ll need. I received many essentials from my baby shower guests, coworkers, and friends, which made a big difference. Plus, having a registry kept me organized and ensured I didn’t overlook any important items.
