The postpartum period, often referred to as the “fourth trimester,” typically lasts about six weeks after childbirth.
However, recovery can continue for several months as your body adjusts and heals. It’s important to listen to your body and seek support as needed during this time.

20 Essential Postpartum Recovery Tips
Here are 20 postpartum recovery tips to help you navigate this journey with more ease and comfort.
Rest and Sleep When You Can
Your body needs time to heal after this major event that you went through. Rest is crucial for recovery, so try to do it as much as possible the first few days postpartum.
Take advantage of nap times, try to delegate tasks, and don’t hesitate to accept help from family and friends. Sleep deprivation can be overwhelming, so just remember to sleep when the baby sleeps!
Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is essential for postpartum recovery. If you’re breastfeeding, it also helps with milk production. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. Keep a water bottle within reach at all times.
I brought home the reusable cup with a straw that the nurses gave me at the hospital, and I still keep it by my bed. If you didn’t get a cup like that, I recommend using a bottle with a straw. It’s really helpful for sipping while you’re holding the baby with your other arm.
Eat Nutritious Foods
Focus on a balanced diet rich in nutrients to help your body heal and maintain energy levels. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein. Foods high in iron, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids can help you recover more quickly.
Take Care of Your Perineum
If you had a vaginal delivery, you might experience perineal soreness. It is important to take care of your perineum.
Use a peri bottle for gentle cleaning, and consider witch hazel pads for added comfort. I got Frida Mom peri bottle with angled neck which helped a lot for cleansing the perineal area.
You can also add numbing sprays, or healing lotions to ease discomfort. I purchased Earth Mama Postpartum Recovery Kit which includes organic perineal balm & herbal perineal spray.
I received postpartum some pads with witch hazel in the hospital, but later started using TUCKS Medicated Cooling Pads, and I highly recommend those as well!
Manage Pain and Discomfort
Postpartum pain, whether from a C-section or vaginal delivery, is common. Over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen, can help. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication.
A cooling gel or ice packs can provide relief for sore areas. I used ice pads a few times per day.
Prioritize Personal Hygiene
Taking regular showers and maintaining personal hygiene is important for your well-being postpartum. Use gentle, unscented products to avoid irritation.
Address Postpartum Bleeding
Lochia, or postpartum bleeding, can last for several weeks. In the beginning, it is normal to have heavy bleeding, but it should go down after some time.
Use maternity pads and avoid tampons, because you can get an infection. There are special postpartum pads which offer better protection and comfort. For example, I used disposable underwear by Always.
Exercise Gently
Once you have your doctor’s approval, engage in gentle exercises like walking or postpartum yoga. This helps improve circulation and mood. It also helps with postpartum recovery.
I started going out for walks with the stroller 2 weeks after I got home.
Focus on Your Mental Health
The postpartum period can bring emotional challenges. Mood disorders are common.
I remember that I cried at least once per day in the beginning. I was anxious and stressed if I am doing all right with the baby. It gets better after a week or two.
On the other hand, if you feel persistently sad or anxious, don’t hesitate to talk to a professional. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
Make Time for Yorself
Find small pockets of time for activities you enjoy, whether it’s reading a book, watching a show, or engaging in a hobby. It’s vital to nurture your identity outside of motherhood. Even short moments of relaxation, like a warm bath or a few minutes of quiet, can help recharge your spirit.
Support Your Skin & Hair Postpartum
Hormonal changes can affect your skin. Use moisturizing lotions and creams to combat dryness and stretch marks.
For example, products with cocoa butter or vitamin E can be effective for maintaining skin elasticity.
I began using shea butter during my pregnancy and have continued to use it to this day.
Unfortunately, my hair started falling out a lot after I gave birth. I began applying virgin olive oil or organic coconut oil to my hair once a week, before washing it. I’m noticing some improvement, and my hair is getting healthier.
Practice Kegel Exercises
Strengthen your pelvic floor with Kegel exercises. These can help with recovery after a vaginal delivery and improve bladder control.
Monitor Your Postpartum Recovery
Keep an eye on your recovery process. If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or signs of infection, reach out to your healthcare provider immediately.
Schedule Check-Ups
Don’t forget to attend your postpartum check-up, usually around six weeks after delivery. This is crucial for monitoring your recovery.
Embrace Breastfeeding Support
Breastfeeding is a challenging process. Trust me, I know. Consider consulting a lactation specialist for guidance. I connected with my local one and got a lot of help regarding breastfeeding techniques. Proper support can make the experience more comfortable and successful.
I advise using a nipple cream for your sore nipples in the beginning. I got Earth Mama organic nipple cream.
If you have difficulties with breastfeeding your baby, you may need to use a nipple shield in the beginning. For instance, I used one for the first three months. If this is your case, take a Medela nipple shield.
Don’t forget also to purchase a few nursing bras for your breastfeeding journey. I got mine while I was in the third trimester.
Prepare for Milk Supply Issues
If you encounter challenges with your milk supply, consider using a breast pump or lactation supplements. A high-quality electric breast pump can help manage milk supply and provide flexibility.
I ordered Medela Pump In Style Electric Breast Pump while I was still pregnant. I am very satisfied with its quality, and I am still using it to pump milk out.
Maintain Good Posture
Proper posture can prevent back and neck pain. Use supportive pillows while feeding your baby and be mindful of your posture throughout the day.
A good quality nursing chair or supportive cushion can make a big difference. For example, I feed my baby on the bed, so I use a wedge pillow for my back.
Plan for Visitors
It’s okay to set boundaries. Limit visitors to ensure you have the space and time you need to bond with your baby and recover.
Be Kind to Yourself
Every woman’s recovery journey is different. Be gentle with yourself and give your body the time it needs to heal.
Accept that it’s okay to have an imperfect house or a less-than-perfect day. Give yourself grace and recognize your efforts.
Celebrate Your Achievements
Being a new mom is not easy, so celebrate your accomplishments along the way! Whether it’s successfully navigating a challenging day or simply making it through a tough moment, acknowledge your achievements. Trust me, it gets better with time.
